Costs include accommodation at Case Vecchie or one of the nearby cottages, shuttle from/to Roccapalumba train station, indicated lessons, meals, wine and excursions. Lunch and dinner are served with wines from the Tasca d’Almerita estate. Typical meals and cooking lessons include three or four courses.

Airfare and private transportation to and from Case Vecchie are not included in the cost. At the time of booking, please let us know if you would like to book a ride to and from the estate. Planned activities and schedules may change at short notice due to seasonal rhythms of life in Sicily.

Arty Parties: A Vegetal Carnevale

Join Julia Sherman and dive into the enticing world of Sicilian vegetables, bringing salad goggles to the island revered the world-over for its terroir. We will even do a little bit of foraging on the Case Vecchie property itself, picking grape leaves to make dolma, drying wild fennel blossoms in the sun to make fennel pollen seasoning. It’s not only vegetables: we will include sustainably sourced seafood and sheep cheese from our neighborhood shepherd. 

Sherman will bring the spirit of her Arty Parties (the title of her latest cookbook), to the itinerary, leading the group in off-site dining, from picnics amongst the vines, to a luncheon at local artisanʼs studio. Our time in the kitchen will be a raucous celebration of Sicilian produce in all its forms, from the well trodden tomato to the rarified cardoon, a prickly plant in the artichoke family, harvested for its meaty stalks. One part grassroots exploration of the native Sicilian food and culture, and one part California cuisine, all prepared with an artistʼs vision.

runs Salad for President, an evolving publishing project that draws a
meaningful connection between food, art and everyday obsessions. Julia is bewitched by vegetables, in all their forms. For her, every seed, plant, and fruiting body is an invitation for invention, and storytelling. The Salad for President platform is not dogmatic, but instead, living proof that eating your vegetables will expand your consciousness.
Sherman, and her writing, recipes, and photography have been featured in Vogue, Departures, The New York Times, T Mag, Domino, Art in America, Food & Wine, and Bon Appétit, amongst others. Shermanʼs Salad for President: A Cookbook Inspired by Artists was published by Abrams Books in the Spring of 2017, and her second cookbook, Arty Parties: An Entertaining Cookbook, was published by Abrams in Fall 2021. Sherman is also the founder and creator of Jus Jus Verjus, an all natural, low ABV sparkling wine. She lives in Los Angeles with her family where she grows over thirty varieties of rare fruit, and hundreds of unusual herbs and veggies.

5:30 pm | Cooking Class: Presentation is Everything, prepare a dinner that tastes as good as it looks

10:30 am | Morning visit to a local Sicilian artisan where Julia will lead a lesson on throwing an off-site arty party for lunch
